JAY – Police, with help from young adults, recovered a 2002 all-terrain vehicle and two chain saws stolen from an Intervale Road residence early Wednesday.

The Yamaha 660 ATV was valued at $8,400 and the two chainsaws in a toolbox on the back of it were valued at $1,000, Jay police Sgt. Charles Keene said.

Police are looking for a young male adult with blond hair.

Keene and Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier initially responded to a complaint of a break-in at a shed on B.J.’s Lane at about 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, Keene said. In the course of the investigation, it was discovered a gas can had been stolen and a man was last seen walking toward Intervale Road with it, he said.

Keene said he went to check out Intervale, also known as Route 140, and came across a man who said he saw a man walking toward Canton. Keene investigated and saw some ATV tracks heading toward Canton. Thinking that was what the gas was for, he followed them. He went to the Intervale resident’s home that the tracks led to and Keene learned that the man had his ATV and chainsaws stolen.

The owner had gone down to the Gilbertville Bridge, which is closed, hoping to catch the person. The ATV and driver did finally come out there but the owner couldn’t hold him, Keene said. The suspect headed the ATV onto a snowmobile trail.

Some young adults, neighbors of the man who had his ATV stolen, brought their ATVs out and started scouring the trails, Keene said. The ATV with the chainsaws still on the back was found abandoned in a mud hole in an old sand pit on Town Farm Road in Canton, he said. The ATV was a little muddy but otherwise OK.
