Since the Peace Corps started in 1961, a total of 1,359 its volunteers have come from Maine. The Peace Corps has trained 169,000 people to date from throughout the United States.

Eighty-three Mainers currently serve in the Peace Corps, out of a total of 6,678 volunteers.

Among American small colleges (5,000 or fewer undergraduates), Colby College in Waterville ranks No. 17 for the total number of alumni who served in the Peace Crops. Colby is tied with two other colleges with 18.

Bates College in Lewiston is tied at No. 22 with six other schools, all of which have 15 alumni who served in the foreign service organization.
