I cannot conceive how any municipal government management could propose what amounts to a decrease in take-home pay for any of its employees. What an insult to dedicated employees.

It would appear that the city of Auburn does not realize how fortunate it is.

Auburn has a very well trained group of professionals in the public safety sector. The police, fire, public works and EMS personnel provide a system of public safety second to none. The management of the city needs to treat them with respect and appreciate these facts, or, one by one, Auburn could start losing valuable workers who keep us safe on a daily basis.

Although I have recently just moved to Lewiston, I am still affected by the decisions that will be negotiated, because these services provide backup public safety services to the city of Lewiston when needed. Therefore, the reciprocal agreements between the Twin Cities are invaluable to both municipalities.

I recognize that these are tough economic times for the city, however, if the police union has agreed to no cost of living raise then I believe that it has already given enough. I feel that the city has an obligation to the police officers and their families. It doesn’t appear as if the police union is asking for anything out of line.

I strongly urge the police union to stick together and hold out for a contract that at least enables officers to keep their insurance and continue to support their families.
