BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Red Sox, looking to improve their right-handed production, claimed outfielder David McCarty off waivers and put lefty designated hitter Jeremy Giambi on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

McCarty was placed on waivers by Oakland after hitting .269 with two doubles and two RBIs in eight games with the Athletics after being called up July 8. He is 7-for-16 against left-handers.

At the time he was called up, he was with Sacramento and led the Pacific Coast League with 72 RBIs and 69 runs. He hit .269 with 15 homers in 91 games.

McCarty, 33, reached the majors with Minnesota in 1993 and has played with San Francisco, Seattle, Kansas City and Tampa Bay. In 512 major league games, he is hitting .236 with 31 homers and 150 RBI.

Giambi went on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left shoulder for the second time this season. He is batting .197 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 127 at bats.
