MEXICO – A Rumford man was arrested late Friday night after he allegedly drove over a teenage girl’s foot on Main Street, police said.

Chris Welch, 21, of 3 Franklin St. was charged with failure to stop at a personal injury accident by officer Michael Richard. Welch will be arraigned Oct. 7 in Rumford District Court on the misdemeanor crime.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Welch, who was driving a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder, stopped at the side of the road opposite Lazarou Motor Inc. to speak with a 16-year-old Mexico girl, Richard said Monday.

“When he took off, he ran over her foot,” Richard said. “He was made aware of it – he had a pastor in the car who said he should go back – but he went home to report it. Even though he went home to call it in, state law says you must stop at the scene and render assistance.”

The girl was transported by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital where she was treated and released.
