PARIS – The McLaughlin Foundation at 97 Main St. in South Paris will hold its seventh annual meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6. The public is invited. Refreshments will follow the meeting. Michael Murphy of Wake Robin Nursery in West Paris will give an illustrated lecture at 7 on Wildflower Meadows. An $8 donation is requested for the talk. Pre-register at 743-8820.

Soccer registration closing Friday

OTISFIELD – Fall soccer sign ups will be closing on Friday, Aug. 8. This is for grades one through six. Practice will begin soon. Those interested can register at the town office at a cost of $20 per child. For more information, call Marianne at 539-9101.

Pops concert slated for Sunday

PARIS – The annual “Pops” concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris. Favorite melodies will be in the form of vocal solos, duets, trios, flute and organ duets and organ solos. Participating in the program will be Jeannie Whittemore, A. Sayward Lamb, J. Haywood Lamb, Renee Wales and Forest Perkins. Refreshments will follow the program in Good Cheer Hall served by the Ladies of the Good Cheer Society. Everyone is invited.

AARP picnic to go rain or shine

PARIS – The Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will have their annual picnic at noon Monday Aug. 11, at the home of Marvis and Jim Maynard. In the event of rain, the picnic will be held inside at the VFW hall on East Main Street in South Paris. For information call Betty Hayes at 527-2105. Bring your own chair and a dish to share. Agricultural group invites quilters

PARIS – The Oxford County Agricultural Society invites the public to participate in the second annual quilt square contest to be held at Oxford County Fair from Sept. 10 to 13. The coordinator is Ann Bellwood, assisted by Elaine Emery. Entries can be submitted from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday,Sept. 5, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. Mailed entries can be sent to Bellwood at 33 Skeetfield Road, Oxford, ME 04270 before Sept. 5. The theme is cornucopia and prizes will be awarded. Benefit auction

to help foundation

PARIS – The McLaughlin Foundation is holding its annual benefit auction starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at 97 Main St., South Paris. Auctioneer wil be Jim Cyr and WCSH’s Shannon Moss. Items include vacation pacakages, kayaks, jewelry and gardening items. Cost to attend the auction is $50 a person.

County Democrats meeting slated

WATERFORD – The August meeting of the Oxford County Democrats will be on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Waterford Town Office Building on Route 35 between North Waterford and Waterford Flat. The meeting will begin with a potluck supper at 5:30, followed by the meeting at 6:30. A speaker from CasinosNo will be included in the program. Representatives of the various Democratic presidential campaigns have been invited to attend. Those attending the supper are asked to bring a food item to share.

Duplicate bridge group plays game

NORWAY – Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge participated in a District 25 STAC game on Aug 1. This game was directed by Rosemarie Goodwin of Lewiston and computer generated hands were played. All ACBL players in New England who played this game received the same hands and all competed against each other as well as club competitions.

The North-South club winners were: first Marcella Allaire and Adele Bendes, second was Pete Cummings and Richard Allen. Eleanor Griffin and Don Hitch came in third and in a tie for third and fourth was Nick Karamessinis and Jane Fournier and Don Johnson and Rowena Palmer.

East-West first winner was Pam and Errol Libby. Second was Paul Barber and Larry Holmes. Eric and Marilyn Sahlberg came in third and fourth was Mil Owens and Beverly Pelletier.

These winners received special silver points. The club meets at 9 a.m. every Friday at Fare Share Commons on Main Street. There is ample municipal parking in back of the building. For more information call Rowena Palmer 743-2882.
