LEWISTON – People planning utility work along outer Main Street should get their work finished in the next couple of months, according to the city.

The city will begin a five-year digging moratorium on the road between Montello Street and the Greene town line once a newly-started paving project wraps up this fall.

Public Works Director Dave Jones said the moratorium is designed to protect the city’s investment in the road.

“We invest a lot of money in paving those roads and we don’t just want people digging them up,” he said.

The city does allow digging for emergency situations – such as broken water lines.

“We charge more for permits, though,” he said.

“And it should be a real emergency. We’re going to ask why this project can’t wait for five years. If there’s no good reason, we won’t approve it,” he said
