1917 – 2003

NORWAY – G. Dewey Thayer, 86, of Mason Township, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

He was born in South Paris on Jan. 20, 1917, a son of Charles W. and Edith R. Powers Thayer. “Dewey”, as he was known, attended South Paris schools and graduated from South Paris High School in 1935.

He married Verna G. Grover on April 27, 1940. He worked for the family grocery business, Thayers Market, in South Paris, and from 1942-1945, he worked at the Portland Shipyard.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. From 1947-1968, he owned and operated Norway Home Bakery and also served as selectman and tax assessor for the Town of Paris for many years. He and his wife then relocated to the town of St. George where he served as Town Manager until 1983.

He was a member and past president of the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club, a member of the Masonic Lodge 94 A.F.&A.M., a life member of the Eastern Star, and he was also a member of the West Bethel Union Church.

He is survived by his wife of Mason Township; a son, Charles Dewey Thayer of Pittsburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Steven, Gregory, Matthew, Michael, Tracyn and Darren; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica, Bonnie, Justin, Shannon, Alexandria, Dylan and Maja; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Ernest Jan. 15, 1996; two sisters, Wynona and Georgia; and two brothers, Alpha and Gordon.
