BALTIMORE – Mike Mussina pitched a three-hitter to win his fourth straight decision, and the New York Yankees completed a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with an 8-0 victory Sunday.
Karim Garcia homered and drove in three runs, and Derek Jeter had three hits for the Yankees, who have won 14 of their last 16 games against Baltimore.
Mussina (14-6) allowed only one runner past first base in his 21st career shutout. The right-hander struck out nine and walked none in his first complete game of the season and 52nd of his career. He retired his last 14 batters, five on strikeouts.
Indians 5, Devil Rays 4
CLEVELAND – Ryan Ludwick singled home the tying run in the 10th inning Sunday, then won it in the 12th with a nearly identical hit that gave the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Terry Mulholland (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings as Cleveland won for the 10th time in 13 games.
Ludwick, who had three hits and three RBIs, singled to left with one out in the 12th off Jesus Colome (3-6) to score Ben Broussard from second base. Broussard drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Casey Blake.
Royals 5, Twins 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Raul Ibanez and Joe Randa hit consecutive home runs in a four-run third inning as Kansas City beat Minnesota 5-4 Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Darrell May (6-6) went 6 1-3 innings for his first win in six starts. The loser was Rick Reed (5-12), who was charged with five runs on nine hits in three innings.
Angels 11, Tigers 6
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Garret Anderson became the Angels’ career hits leader and threw out the potential tying run at the plate as Anaheim beat the hapless Detroit Tigers 11-6 for its fifth straight victory.
Anderson was 3-for-5, including a two-run double during a five-run seventh inning – increasing his career hits total to 1,591. The All-Star MVP and Home Run Derby champ tied Brian Downing’s club mark for hits with an infield single Saturday night, then broke it in the first inning with another infield hit to second base.
Athletics 7, Blue Jays 3
OAKLAND, Calif. – Terrence Long drove in three runs, and the Oakland Athletics roughed up Roy Halladay in a 7-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
Barry Zito pitched seven solid innings, winning his second start in a row following a career-worst five-game losing streak.
Rangers 6, White Sox 4
ARLINGTON, Texas – Alex Rodriguez hit his 33rd homer and a tiebreaking two-run triple in the seventh inning as the Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4 victory Sunday night.
With the game tied at 4, the Rangers put runners at first and second in the seventh on singles by Einar Diaz and Donnie Sadler.
Rodriguez then hit a sinking liner to center field off Damaso Marte (4-2) that got past a diving Carl Everett and rolled to the warning track as both runners scored.
, giving Texas the lead.
The Rangers won their fifth straight and improved their record in August to a major league-best 12-4.
Jay Powell (3-0) allowed one hit in three scoreless innings of relief.
Francisco Cordero got three outs for his 11th save in 18 chances.
Marte allowed two runs and three hits over one inning.
Joe Crede homered for the White Sox.
In a matchup of rookies making their second major league starts, Chicago’s Neal Cotts lasted 5 2-3 innings and Texas’ Juan Dominguez was gone after four innings.
Cotts allowed four runs and five hits, struck out six and walked two.
Dominguez gave up four runs and four hits, struck out five and walked two.
In the third, Cotts walked Shane Spencer and then allowed RBI doubles to Mark Teixeira, Marcus Thames and Diaz as Texas went in front 3-0.
Crede’s 13th homer leading off the third pulled the White Sox within 3-1.
The White Sox went in front 4-3 with a three-run fourth. Magglio Ordonez led off with a single and went to third on Everett’s double. Paul Konerko grounded to Rodriguez at shortstop, who threw to third in an attempt to retire Everett while Ordonez scored the inning’s first run. The throw beat Everett, but third base umpire Dan Iassogna called Everett safe, ruling that Everett slid in under the Sadler’s tag at third base.
Jose Valentin’s RBI double tied it, and Crede’s groundout drove in Konerko to make it 4-3.
Rodriguez’s homer leading off the sixth tied it at 4.
Notes: Everett’s second hit of the night was the 1,000th of his career. … Rangers third base coach Steve Smith was ejected by Iassogna in the bottom of the fourth when he argued with Iassogna over the tag play in the top of the inning. First base coach DeMarlo Hale moved to third and bench coach Don Wakamatsu took over at first. Smith has been ejected three times this season. …The White Sox completed a 1-6 road trip.
