1907 – 2003

WISCASSET – Helen M. Gross, 96, a longtime resident of Federal Street, died Monday, Aug. 18, at Maple Haven Boarding Home.

She was born in Fairfield, on Jan. 22, 1907, the daughter of Frank A. and Mattie B. (Foss) Wilson. In 1924 she graduated from Eastern Maine Conference Seminary. On Sept. 25, 1926, she married Ralph L. Gross and in 1936 they moved to Wiscasset.

Mrs. Gross became a member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset in 1974 where she was active in the Organ Society, a past matron of the Eastern Star in Wiscasset, the Wiscasset Garden Club and she volunteered at the C.E.I., the Old Jail and Museum and the Library all in Wiscasset. She enjoyed music, playing the organ, gardening and crafts.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph L. Gross Jr. and his wife Thelma of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and Stuart I. Gross and his wife Jeannette of Leeds; five daughters, Rita A. Melville of Woolwich, Helen G. Amazeen of Redlevel, Ala., Jane A. Albert and her husband Robert of Edgecomb, Jean G. West and her husband Ronald of Newcastle and Donna L. Lester and her husband Michael of Portland; one brother, John Wilson and his wife Ola of Bucksport; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph L. Gross Sr. on May 15, 1985; one brother, Arthur Wilson; two sisters, Dorothy Ross and Hilda Sawyer.
