I was disappointed to read Auburn Rep. Deborah Simpson’s comments on the tax reform discussion. She called the voter’s referendum on property tax relief by the Maine Municipal Association “dangerous.” Another representative used those same words.

It appears she prefers the governor’s inadequate plan, which will make Auburn’s school children and voters wait another generation for adequate funding for schools and badly needed property tax relief.

For three years our leaders in Augusta have promised property tax relief, with no result. Our governor promised the same. He accomplished much this session on the deficit and health care. His solution on property tax relief is weak His plan serves to confuse the public and give editorial writers work.

Legislators have been listening to the voter and had many very good ideas this session. They didn’t have the chance to discuss them. They and the voters were promised that opportunity in the special session. I urge legislators to use the session to come up with a better plan instead of wasting time promoting or bashing either of the other proposals.

Absent better solutions, the MMA plan provides immediate funding for our schools and property tax relief. It provides legislators the flexibility and time to discuss and choose solutions they couldn’t find on their own. It takes the politics out of the solution.
