I am writing about a problem with state pensions and social security. I have just retired from the Auburn school department and am receiving a pension from the Maine state retirement system. My first husband paid into Social Security for 40 years and, as his widow, I am entitled to receive a benefit. Because of a law called the Government Pension Offset, I will receive only about one-third of his benefits. This effects many other state and city workers who are under the state pension plan. There are 15 states with the same laws.

Teachers are also penalized in another area. We have to pay 65 percent of the cost of our health insurance. Any regular state worker has 100 percent of their insurance paid by the state.

If others are concerned about these issues, they should discuss the issue with their senators and representatives in the state and federal government. These issues are being addressed in the legislature at the moment.
