1907 – 2003

Lewiston – Evelyn Katula, 96, of the Bowdoinham Road, Sabattus, died early Sunday morning, Aug. 24, at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born Feb. 13, 1907 in Sabattus, the daughter of H.E. and Esther Doherty Walker. At age four, she started school at the Fisher School House in Sabattus, where she later taught. She attended Sabattus High School for two years and transferred to Brighton High School in Massachusetts, where she graduated in 1926.

After graduation, she returned to Maine and attended Aroostook Normal School. The following year she taught in Washington County at a small rural school. At the end of her first year teaching, she returned to Sabattus and attended summer sessions at Gorham State Normal School, working for credits that enabled her to secure her degree for teaching in elementary schools. She taught for 17 years.

In 1941, she married John Katula of Lisbon Falls. Together they operated a dairy farm where they raised registered Holsteins. John and Evelyn enjoyed life together until his death in 1986.

She enjoyed her home, horseback riding, flowers, figure skating, snowmobiling, fishing, and all outdoor sports.

She was a member of the West Bowdoin Baptist Church, the WBBC Mission Circle, the Lakeside Chapter of Eastern Star, the Bowdoin Snowmobile Club, Lisbon Senior Citizens, Androscoggin RTA and NRTA.

She enjoyed all the beauty God created.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, one of whom she raised from birth through the sixth grade; several cousins; and her extended family of friends and neighbors.

She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Edith Brown; and three brothers, Jay, Walter and Elwood Walker.
