LEWISTON – The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College is offering courses this fall for those thinking of teaching as a career.
EDU 100 Exploring Teaching as a Profession is an introduction to the study of education and teaching. It offers students an opportunity to examine and evaluate their interest in and fitness for teaching. The relationship between schools and society is explored, and the law and its effect on education is examined. Current teaching methods are introduced, and students are given the opportunity to work with children and teachers in a local school setting. This three-credit course will be offered Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. starting Sept. 4.
EDU 200 Education in the U.S. is an examination of issues and problems in education and schooling in the United States from social, historical, political and philosophical perspectives. It creates an intellectual dialogue among the students to help clarify personal interpretations and opinions on themes, issues and events. Students will also survey the major philosophical influences on public elementary and secondary education in the U.S. This three-credit course will be offered Mondays from 1 to 3:30 or 4 to 6:30 p.m. starting Sept. 8.
