AUBURN – Donna Richey, development director for the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, gave Travis Durgin of Mexico an exceptional sponsorship award on Aug. 18. The award was for his contribution to the Humane Society’s Strutt your Mutt Dog Walk. He raised more than $380.

The Humane Society’s event, June 7 at Railroad Park in Lewiston, generated more than $8,000, all of which goes directly to the homeless, abandoned and abused animals at the humane society for their food, shelter, veterinary care and a chance at a new home.

The shelter provides a haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals annually. The primary support for the shelter comes from donations and fund-raising events.

The shelter serves nine municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a population of more than 90,000 people.

The shelter at 3312 Hotel Road is holding a capital campaign to raise funds for a new shelter. Anyone interested in helping can call 786-4713. Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can visit the shelter or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
