AUBURN – A new Friday evening Sabbath service will begin Friday, Aug. 29, at Temple Shalom with more English than Hebrew, more music and more explanations of what the service is about.
The service will be led by Cantor Hillel Katzir, spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the synagogue, 74 Bradman St.
“Many people are interested or curious about Sabbath services, or about being a part of the Jewish community, but are put off because, traditionally, most of the prayers are said in Hebrew,” said Katzir. “This new monthly service will give everyone – members, nonmembers, anyone who is interested – a chance to experience the beauty of this special time of the week, as we join together to welcome the Sabbath.”
The new service, called “Friday Night Together,” will take place on the fourth Friday evening of each month. The 7:30 p.m. service will be followed by an “Oneg Shabbat,” a time for those attending to have refreshments and socialize. Children are welcome.
Temple Shalom will continue to offer a more traditional Friday evening service on the second Friday evening of each month, at which everyone is also welcome.
