MINOT – The slash pile next to the Minot Consolidated School will be gone by week’s end, according to principal Don Bilodeau.

School Committee member Chris Woodford remarked that the slash pile, the remnants of a logging operation that opened up roads and an area for new ball fields on land recently purchased by the town, must be a powerful enticement for area youngsters.

“I find it hard to believe that kids haven’t climbed that pile,” said Woodford.

Addressing Woodford’s concerns for student safety at Tuesday’s School Committee meeting, Bilodeau said the area is off limits to students. He reported that Union 29 support services Director Frank D’Agostino had met with workers chipping the slash and had been told the pile would be gone this week.

According to the logging contract, all work was to be completed by Aug. 25, however, school Superintendent Nina Schlikin said that equipment failure had caused a delay.

Selectman Dean Campbell asked the School Committee for representation on a special committee to study the schedule for the development impact fee instituted by the town in May. The impact fee was set at $2,000 per dwelling with up to 4 bedrooms and $500 per bedroom beyond that.

“We know we’re not charging too much,” said Campbell, “but maybe we should be charging more,” said Campbell.

In his principal’s report, Bilodeau said that plans for the Bog Brook team-building experience may or may not go forward depending on parent reaction at Thursday’s open house.

Assistant Superintendent Bill Doughty said he intends to hire a Gifted and Talented teacher who will work half-time for Minot and half-time for Poland and would be interviewing shortly.

The School Committee approved hiring Jean Nale as part-time art and part-time long-term Title I teacher substitute, and Jay Partridge as the school’s physical education/health teacher.

Schlikin announced that she was appointing Partridge to serve as the school’s activities director and as girl’s soccer coach. Jay Brown was appointed as boy’s soccer coach.
