PARIS – A Peru man has been indicted on charges that he stabbed his ex-wife the day he learned their divorce had become final.

Dwayne Childs, 43, is charged with aggravated attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault by an Oxford County grand jury. The Aug. 29 indictment said Childs’ “intent to kill was accompanied by premeditation in fact.” It said he entered Mildred Childs’ apartment at 22 Third St. in Dixfield on June 14 and stabbed her several times in the abdomen.

The stabbing stemmed from an argument that occurred when Childs received documentation that the final divorce decree had been issued, Dixfield Police Chief Richard Pickett said.

After an 8:40 p.m. call to Oxford County dispatchers alerted police to the attack, Mildred Childs was rushed by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Dwayne Childs was taken by ambulance to Rumford Hospital and later transferred to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston with self-inflicted stab wounds, police said.

No court date has been set in the case, which will be heard in Oxford County Superior Court.
