RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board voted unanimously Tuesday night to reinstate four students who were expelled during the last school year.

Superintendent James Hodgkin said a middle school student had been expelled for bringing a knife to school. Another middle school student was expelled for committing a drug infraction.

Two high school students were also re-admitted. One had been expelled for committing a drug infraction. The second for threatening a member of the high school staff.

Each school had one boy and one girl who had been expelled.

The decisions followed four closed-door hearings totaling 75 minutes. Meeting with the board during one or more of the sessions were the Special Education Director Paige Coville, Mountain Valley High School Principal Bruce Lindberg, Mountain Valley Middle School Principal Charles Lever, the parents and the students.

Hodgkin said all re-admitted students were given specific conditions for their return. Each had had a professional assessment before going before the board.

Three had been expelled last spring. The fourth was expelled last winter.
