I have never been a sports fan. Lately, the first section of the paper I turn to is the sports page. My husband is elated. Why? He introduced me to Lewiston’s newly renovated hockey arena and the 25 new faces to our neighborhood – the Maineiacs.

Over the past weeks, I have watched the transformation of the hockey rink, have seen the enthusiasm of the staff, watched the hope and determination of the players as they skated for a position on the team, saw the pride and sacrifice their parents had made and felt the excitement of the spectators who watched. Many new friendships were made as spectators introduced themselves to others – so many telling of how they came to this rink with their fathers years ago. People were proud to be there.

These 25 players have already won two games and have brought along with their hockey sticks excitement and pride to our community. The Maineiacs’ staff has gone out of their way to make players, parents and fans feel welcome. They should be commended for the job they have done.

With our continued support and encouragement, we can show the players why we believe the state of Maine is a wonderful place to live.
