RUMFORD – Black Mountain of Maine has unveiled a new logo that incorporates its new owners, the non-profit Maine Winter Sports Center.

At the same time, the new director of skiing at the mountain, Pete Phillips, is putting out a call for volunteers to help spruce up the small, family-oriented facility.

Needed at 8 a.m. Sunday are people with the skills and willingness to begin painting the new ski lift silver and blue, replace the lodge deck, repair the overhead foot bridge, and move the entry sign closer to the entrance to the mountain, among other things.

All these tasks aren’t expected to be completed on Sunday.

Instead, Phillips said teams will be formed that can work on projects as they have time. Mountain Operations Manager Jeff Knight will be at the center Sunday to oversee the work and help organize teams.

All the work should be completed before the season begins in December.

Phillips said most of the environmental permits have been approved so that logging at the top of the mountain and cutting trees to make way for the new lift lines can be done. Mountain officials are waiting for one more Department of Environmental Protection permit approval. That one governs taking water out of a stream for use in snow-making.

The logo, a stylized version of the former Black Mountain logo that incorporates the MWSC tri-leafed symbol, will appear on all publications put out by the mountain, including a new brochure.

Expected to be ready in time for the River Valley Expo on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, the brochure will outline all the programs and other offerings available at the mountain.

About 20,000 copies will be distributed around the state and in other areas across the country, particularly to those clubs and teams who regularly attend competitions at Black Mountain.

Phillips said to help defray the cost of printing the brochure, he is asking businesses to purchase advertisements in the publication.

He may be contacted at 364-0882.
