It will be a challenge for the Rangeley boys’ soccer team to repeat its feat of a year ago, but the Lakers just might be up for it.

After going 14-2 overall and losing in the Western D semifinals, the Lakers have a team that could be a threat in the East-West Conference again.

“We have just as much skill, and they’re giving 100 percent. We should compete awfully well in every game,” said first-year coach Aaron Turcotte.

Rangeley lost All-State striker Shakur Abdi and veteran keeper Neil Stewart among six graduated seniors. Still, the Lakers return Jimmy Goodwin, Courtney Ellis, Tyler Philbrick, Mike George, James Raymond and Tad Clark to the starting lineup. There are also a wealth of freshmen that should make this an exciting team now and in the future.

Turcotte brings a more ball control-oriented style to the field. The Lakers have adjusted well, and their level of play should rise as they grow even more comfortable playing a new style.

“In Class D, it should confuse some of the teams that we’re playing,” said Turcotte. “On good days we’ll win, and on bad days, we’ll try our hardest to win.”

Buckfield finished last fall 6-6-2 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Bucks have a new coach, as well. Last season was a sort of a rebuilding season for the Bucks, so coach Al Hanson hopes this club can pick up where that one left off.

“They look good,” Hanson said. “I’m hopeful. I don’t think we can do any worse than last year. I’m looking forward to the playoffs. That’s where we’re setting our sights.”

The Bucks have a core group of upperclassmen. Seniors Jeremy Stevens, Tyler Campbell, Mark Smith, Scott Wilson, Zack Gillis, Jake Poulin and junior Chris Dailey all return.

Richmond typically is an EWC threat and should be competitive again, despite having nine freshmen. Veteran keeper Steve Wullaert will anchor the team’s young defense.

After a two-year break from having a program,
Valley went 6-7 last year. The Cavaliers lost nobody to graduation and should improve their play this season.

Windham Christian and Vinalhaven each had two wins last year and could be more competitive this fall.
