FARMINGTON – The Second Saturday dances will be continuing this fall at the Farmington Grange. In the traditional New England style, an evening of dancing consists of contras, circles, waltzes and sometimes squares or other partner dances.
Also in keeping with tradition, this is “social dancing,” meaning that participants need not bring a partner but rather can dance with anyone who shows up and typically will share dances with several partners over the course of an evening. For most dances, the caller will walk dancers through a dance once or twice before the music begins so beginners can easily fit in.
This fall’s line-up includes the following: Sept. 13, The Gawler Family, with Barbara Godfrey calling; Oct. 11, The North Star Sisters with John McIntire calling; Nov. 8, Franklin County Fiddlers, with John McIntire calling; Dec. 13, Cape Cod Hill String Band and Auxiliary, with band members Hank Washburn, Cynthia Phinney and Margaret Cox, Eric Johnson and Mark Rains doing the calling.
As a special feature for the December dance, longtime dance caller and teacher Larry Brauser will be coming from Bethel to lead a waltz workshop at 7 p.m. prior to the dance. Admission to the waltz workshop is free with dance admission.
Dances are held on the second Saturday of each month, beginning at 8 p.m. and ending sometime around 11. Admission is $5 per person, with a $10 family max.
