LEWISTON – The Y-ettes will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the YWCA, East Avenue. Arvilla Kay and Bette Buchanan will serve refreshments.

Granger honored

WINTHROP – At a recent meeting of Winthrop Grange 209, Warren Davenport was elected gatekeeper. A Golden Sheaf 50-year member certificate was presented to Davenport by State Deputy Vernon Dunn of Belgrade. Doris Bryant was presented her 60-year certificate.

The Grange will hold a planning meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Grange Hall. The program and activities for the year will be developed.

Robin Dow

AUBURN – Robin Dow Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the American Legion Hall, Washington Street. The board of directors will meet at 10. Bingo will be played after a bag lunch. Tickets for the October Halloween party will be on sale. Dues must be paid for 2003 in order to attend.

Seventy-eight members met Aug. 27 under the direction of the president, Audrey Fleming. Membership chairwoman Lucy Cowles reported a total of 161 members. Tony DeBurra was welcomed back after a long absence due to illness. Attendance prize winners were Marion Gayton and Bea Everett; pot of gold, Beverly Lashua, Eleanor Jewel and Hope Telow. Birthdays were acknowledged.

Trip chairwoman Evelyn Sawin said there were still vacancies on the Sept. 26 foliage trip that includes leaving from a Portland pier on the Duck with dinner at the Village Cafe, a bus trip up Route 1 to Augusta and return to Auburn. AUBURN – The Auburn VFW will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, to finalize plans to honor Korean War veterans at the annual post picnic at noon Sunday, Sept. 14.

The VFW Post will have free hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and all the fixings plus a DJ. Korean War veterans will receive a pin from post Quartermaster Donald Linscott, who is also a Korean war veteran, serving in the Marine Corps.

Cook in charge of the grill will be retired Marine Sgt. Maj. Bob Turcotte, also a Korean veteran. All post members are invited.

Look good

LEWISTON – A Look Good … Feel Better session, the American Cancer Society program for assisting women who are faced with appearance changes resulting from cancer treatment, will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Central Maine Medical Center Cynthia A. Rydholm Cancer Treatment Center.

A volunteer from the National Cosmetology Association will teach a small group of women how to apply cosmetics specific to their individual needs. Hair and wig styling will also be discussed. Wigs are available through purchase or loan. Each participant will be given a complimentary bag of cosmetics made available through the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation.

WLU speaker

AUBURN – The first fall meeting of the Woman’s Literary Union will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Horatio G. Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St.

The speaker will be Jackie Mastrianni of Auburn whose topic will be “Magic Hands.” Mastrianni is a massage therapist and has studied Chinese herbal medicine. She has traveled to Beijing to observe the Chinese medical system and studied the practice of herbal medicine. She will recount her experiences in China.

Refreshments will be served at the meeting. Visitors are welcomed.

LEWISTON – Lewiston Emblem Club 528 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Lewiston Lodge of Elks, 1675 Lisbon St. All members are encouraged to attend. The club is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and is always looking for new members.

AUBURN – Expectant women and breast-feeding mothers are invited to a La Leche League meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are welcome. The discussion will focus on “The Advantages of Breast-feeding for Mother and Baby.”

All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion.

DAR program

AUBURN – Regent Jayne Bickford announces that Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the home of Mrs. Edward Desgrosseilliers. Bickford will present a program, “Thoughts on Our Constitution,” in honor of Constitution Week, Sept. 17 to 23.

Celebration

LEWISTON – A multicultural celebration, sponsored by the Maine Rural Workers Coalition, will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in Kennedy Park. All are invited.

Bridge Club

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on Sept. 2 at the Multi-Purpose Center. North/South winners in Flight A were: first, Doug and Betty Sise; second, Nancy Lindgren and Rolande Poulin; tied at third, Jeanine Kivus and Martine Begert with Nick Karamessinis and Jane Fournier. Flight B winners were: first, Doug and Betty Sise; second, Nick Karamessinis and Jane Fournier.

East/West winners in Flight A were: first, Fred Letourneau and Rosemarie Goodwin; second, Luke Merry and David Lock; third, Larry Fortier and Terry Gendron. Flight B winners were: first, Larry Fortier and Terry Gendron; second, Connie Simpson and Alberta Turner.

Another game will held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the center. A partner is guaranteed.

The club also met on Sept. 4 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Winners in Flight A were: first,- Ray Sirois and John Hackett; second, Martine Begert and Lucille Theriault; third, Jeanine Kivus and Rosemarie Goodwin; fourth, Mike Quinn and Les Buzzell. Winners in Flight B were: first, Roger Briggs and Ed Oldham; second, Doug and Betty Sise.

The game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, will be the ACBL Instant Matchpoint Game. A gold point is given to the section top in each direction for each section.
