ALDRED (AP) – A Sanford man has been indicted on charges he tried to rape and kill a 16-year-old Shapleigh girl in July.

Edward Scott, 31, of Sanford was indicted last week by a York County grand jury on charges of attempted murder and sexual assault.

Scott is being held at the York County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Authorities say Scott attacked the girl July 21 as she was showing him a used van that he was considering buying.

Her brother fended off the attack and Scott fled, crashing his car nearby. He was arrested the next day at his brother’s house in Alfred.

Scott is also facing an assault charge for allegedly hitting his 4-month-old daughter in June.
