BETHEL – The Mahoosuc Arts Council is hosting a medieval romp of dragon fighting, colorful banners and festival carnival music this month.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, Los Titiriteros de Binefar – The Puppeteers of Binefar – will perform a special engagement of “Dragoncio” (The Princess and the Dragon) at Crescent Park School.
In conjunction with the Figures of Speech Theatre’s World Puppet Festival taking place in Portland from Sept. 9 through 14, Los Titiriteros de Binefar are on tour from the Aragon region of northern Spain.
“Dragoncio” is a fairy tale with hand and rod puppets, live music played on traditional Spanish instruments, and the feeling of street fairs jumping through time from the Middle Ages to the present, said Mahoosuc Arts Council spokeswoman Vicki Rackliffe.
In this version of the story of St. George and the Dragon, Los Titiriteros de Binefar has altered the legend, making the knight not so brave. The princess also has her own initiative and the dragon is not really bad, but it’s up to the audience to determine who the villain is, Rackliffe added.
“At its heart, the story reaffirms the power of play and imagination as agents of change,” she said.
Dialog during the show will be spoken in English. Tickets will be sold at the door. Admission is $4 for students and $6 for adults. For more information, contact the Mahoosuc Arts office at 824-3575.
