FARMINGTON – The Maine Tourism Commission is seeking public input on how to balance the state’s booming tourism industry and the use and protection of legendary natural resources.

Public forums to gain insight on the relationship between the two, both of which are crucial to the state’s economy, are being held throughout the state this month. One is in Farmington on Thursday.

The community brainstorm sessions are in response to a newly formed Natural Resources Committee formed by the MTC.

Comprised of members of the MTC representing landowners, professional guides, sportsmen and camping organizations, as well as representatives from state wildlife, conservation and wilderness groups, the NRC hopes to collect information and concerns from regional tourism representatives, according to its Web site.

Once the information from the forums is gathered, the committee will develop strategies for ensuring the sustainable use of resources by citizens and visitors who wish to take advantage of the wide range of recreation opportunities in the state.

Finally, the group will develop and recommend programs that will keep the tourism industry vibrant while capitalizing and protecting natural resources, making a presentation to the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Business, Research and Economic Development during the second session of the current legislature.

Examples of ideas that could be presented to the government committee include improving wetland boardwalks, installing more highway signs and starting and promoting wildlife and birding festivals to enhance rather than hurt recognized resources, the Web site says.

All members of the public are encouraged to attend the forums, says Nat Bowditch of the Maine Office of Tourism.
