I am extremely irritated with local and state government, concerning regulating motorcycles, in terms of maintenance, specifically the modification of the muffler systems. These motorcycles do have an inspection requirement, which appears to be a joke.

I hear motorcycles all day and night, that are as loud as tractors, trains and jets, but I do not see any enforcement of laws regulating the noise factor. It is perhaps an impossible task to stop this nonsense. But perhaps Lewiston can follow Portland and Saco, and create ordinances to cease operating these motorcycles within the city, if they have been modified. I have no idea of the wording of such legislation. Perhaps a copy of Portland ordinance or a copy of Saco’s proposal would be appropriate.

Also, we require wearing seat belts in automobiles and wearing helmets while riding a bicycle. Why are motorcyclists not required to wear helmets?

They travel faster then cars, in most cases. I returned from Augusta Sunday, maintaining the speed limit, and was passed by at least 50 motorcycles. Maintaining their safety should be a concern to our legislators, but apparently politics are involved in this particular case – our governor and past governor are motorcyclist.

My position is, I am not against motorcyclist enjoying themselves, but not at the expense of disturbing neighborhoods with their loud noises.
