Sen. Sharon Treat’s letter regarding the special session “of which we can be proud” was pure spin at best and pure poppycock at worst (Sept. 10).

I found it curious that an out-of-town senator had to concoct a fantasy yarn to rationalize the fact that one of our local state senators held the entire State Senate up for hours on the first day of the session. With the other 34 senators showing up punctually, Sen. Neria Douglass breezed in after 6 p.m.

We can be sure that if a Republican Senator had been late, the extremely partisan Senate president would have gaveled the senate into action with great dispatch and aplomb. The “noses had been counted” and nothing of any import was going to be voted on without the late Senator Douglass.

Only a senator who absolutely enjoys spending our money can be “proud” of asking the voters to borrow yet another $90 million or so for pork barrel projects sprinkled throughout the state. If these projects are so important, why aren’t they funded out of this year’s taxes?

Speaking of big bucks, it appears that the Senate’s answer to the MMA proposal that, if passed, guarantees additional state spending for schools to the tune of an estimated $1.3 billion over the next five years is a proposal that should drain our pockets to the tune of only $450 million in the same period.

Join me in voting for none of the above.
