TURNER – Students from Leavitt Area High School will be participating in Make a Difference Day on Friday, Oct. 24, and they need local residents’ help.

According to Stacey Pellerin at Leavitt, who is helping to coordinate the activity, students are willing to work but need jobs to work at throughout the district towns of Turner, Leeds and Greene.

This is a day entirely devoted to community service and all freshmen at Leavitt participate. It is designed to help students understand the needs of their communities and to experience service to others first-hand.

“By learning to help others, students can change lives for the better, including their own,” Pellerin said. “In addition, they learn civic responsibility as well as collaborative and team social skills.”

The Make a Difference Day Committee is currently planning projects for the October event but need suggestions from the community. The project deadline is Monday, Sept. 22. Some activities in the past have included students working at area food banks, cleanup and restoration of cemeteries, maintenance at town buildings, working for the elderly and assisting in classrooms.

Anyone with a project idea is asked to call Pellerin at 225-3533 or Karen Henry at Leeds Central at 524-5151, Sheila Martel at Greene Central at 946-5681 or Brenda Theriault at 946-5750.
