OXFORD – Voters will be asked to settle, once and for all, what the town’s association is with the Maine State Retirement System at a special town meeting Wednesday.

The 7 p.m. meeting at town hall on Pleasant Street in the village will impact at least eight employees who want to receive MSRS benefits. The retirement system has informed the town that the it never withdrew from the system, and owes about $55,000 through December of 2002. Selectmen are disputing the opinion.

Two warrant articles will address the issue. The first asks voters if they want to ratify that the town withdrew from the retirement system in 1993, or, if not, to withdraw from the system as soon as possible.

The second asks voters if they want to pay Maine State Retirement System to purchase previous service credit for the eight employees.

Other warrant articles up for a vote Wednesday deal with $5,000 needed to pay for insurance hikes, and whether to spend up to $100,000 to buy a plow truck for the highway department.

A final question would authorize selectmen to dispose of town property worth less than $5,000 without having to go through a public bid process.
