RUMFORD – The number of veterans signed up to travel to Washington in the spring to attend the dedication of the national World War II monument is continuing to grow.

Lorretta Bard, a nurse at the Rumford Veterans Clinic and one of the organizers of the chartered trip, said a special meeting held Tuesday drew about 20 veterans who wanted to learn more about the trip.

So far, 31 WWII, Korean War and a few spouses have made deposits for the historic trip. Virtually all come from the River Valley area. One woman veteran, a retired Army nurse from Rumford, has also signed up. Bard and another nurse will travel with the group.

“I am confident we will get the 50 people we need,” said Bard.

She is organizing a tour through Cyr Bus Line in Auburn that will take local veterans to the Washington dedication ceremony in May. Travelers will leave the area on May 28, attend the dedication of the memorial on May 29, then return on May 30. Cost for transportation and two nights lodging is $225. About half of the cost must be paid by the end of the week.

Bard said veterans will likely tour the Maine section of the memorial as well as attend the ceremony itself. She expects many vets will be reunited with others they fought with during World War II.
