SAD 43 students will need four years of high school math to graduate, beginning with this year’s freshmen.
RUMFORD – SAD 43 high school students in the class of 2007 will be required to successfully complete four years of math before they can graduate.
The board adopted a policy outlining the new requirement on Monday.
Curriculum Coordinator Gloria Jenkins said the new math requirement, which affects this year’s freshmen, calls for one course in algebra. Before, students were required to successfully complete three math courses.
The addition of the new course also brings the number of credits required to graduate to 22, from 21. The math requirement is part of the state’s mandate that all students meet Maine Learning Results by 2007.
The board also adopted a pesticide management policy that calls for notification of parents before spraying is done either inside or outside of a school building.
Jenkins said the building and grounds department rarely sprays for insects. Instead, bait traps are usually set if needed.
The policy is a requirement of the state Department of Education.
Also on Monday, the board approved an agreement with the Mexico Historical Society to lend it several items once owned by the former Mexico High School and other schools in Mexico.
Among the items lent to the historical society are yearbooks, an MHS banner and a construction plaque naming the members of the school board at the time the high school was built. A bell that once belonged to either the Abbott or Kimball school was also lent to the group.
The agreement will be ongoing and reviewed by the SAD 43 board every three years.
Several support positions were filled, including Donna Hamann, Tracey Cummings and Lucy Marcellino to food service jobs, and Terry Volkernick as a custodian. Pam Rousseau will become the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee Science Team chairwoman; Ann Gauvin, student council advisor; Carlene Nichols, class of 2005 advisor; and Nancy DeMilner fall drama coach.
Heather Bryant was appointed junior varsity field hockey coach and Tammy Gallant softball coach at Mountain Valley Middle School.
