WEST PARIS – It was announced by Selectman Chairman Wade Rainey Wednesday that the town office will be closed all day Friday for the funeral of Selectman Harlan Abbott.

Abbott died Monday at a Boston hospital of burns suffered Sunday in a plane crash near Horseshoe Pond in the Greenville area. He was serving his second three-year term on the board following re-election last March.

During his tenure on the board he served as chairman in 2002 and was a major player in organizing the town’s Old Home Days Celebration. He also worked hard to assist in the return of Soap Box Derby racing to the town and worked for enhancing town supported youth activities.

Along with his civic duties as a selectman, Abbott was an active member of the West Paris Historical Society and served as president of that organization.

He was 67.

Rainey also announced that there will be no selectmen’s meeting Thursday evening in order to allow all town officials and office staff members to attend visiting hours at the Weston Chandler Funeral Home in South Paris from 6 to 8 p.m.
