AUBURN – Ian Mulligan, winner of this year’s Auburn Book Award, will be signing copies of his book, “Awakened,” at Waldenbooks this Saturday.
Written in rhyme, “Awakened” tells the story of a 10-year-old boy who is kidnapped in the middle of the night by a trio of witches. Mulligan, 12, wrote and illustrated the 21-page children’s book last year as a sixth-grader at Webster Intermediate School.
More than 60 books were submitted to the annual Auburn Book Project, which encourages elementary students to experience the life of a professional writer by creating and editing their own children’s books.
Of the 63 books, nine became finalists. Judges – area librarians and teachers – fell in love with the detailed illustrations and fast-paced story of “Awakened.”
As winner of the Book Award, Mulligan’s story was printed and bound over the summer. Copies will be given to local school libraries. One will be presented to the Auburn Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
From 1 to 3 that afternoon, Mulligan will sign copies of the book at Waldenbooks in the Auburn Mall. Copies will be sold for $10 each.
