LISBON FALLS – Coombs Mountfort Post 158, American Legion, and Auxiliary will resume monthly meetings at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the post home.
Doughnut party
AUBURN – To celebrate their second successful year as fund-raising partners at the Great Falls Balloon Festival, the Boys and Girls Club of Auburn/Lewiston and Dunkin’ Donuts will throw a party from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the club, 43 Second St.
At the 11th annual balloon festival in August, volunteers from Dunkin’ Donuts raised $1,330 for the Boys and Girls Club by selling lemonade coolattas. This year’s total was almost double the amount raised at the 2002 festival.
The party is free and open to all Boys and Girls Club members. Hot chocolate will be served with an assortment of doughnuts.
Quilting classes
MONMOUTH – A quilting class will get under way from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Henry L. Cottrell School cafeteria, Academy Road.
The sessions will run through Nov. 11 and proceeds will benefit Cumston Library projects. Cost is $20. Call the library at 933-4788 or Nancy Ludewig at 933-4677.
Robin Dow
AUBURN – Robin Dow Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the American Legion Hall, Washington Street. Tickets will be available for the Halloween party on Oct. 22 and will be sold at Robin Dow meetings Sept. 24 and Oct. 8; cost, $4.
Seventy-five members were present when the group met Sept. 10 under the direction of President Audrey Fleming. A new member, Fan Derosay, was welcomed. Birthdays for September were acknowledged.
Trip Chairwoman Evelyn Sawin gave time of departure as 8 a.m. from the American Legion Hall for the foliage trip Sept. 26 and reminded members of the Indian Head trip Dec. 6 for $42. Writers’ jam
LEWISTON – Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance will present an informal Writers’ Jam on Wednesdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 8 at the Mr. Paperback Cafe, Promenade Mall, Lisbon Street.
The event will begin with a social half hour at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting running from 7 to 8:45 p.m. It is open to all genres and is free. Call the alliance at 386-1400 or e-mail [email protected] if planning to attend. Bring work and be prepared to read from it. The group will discuss it.
Rx for ME
LEWISTON – Rx Cares for ME will give a demonstration of services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St., second-floor study room. It is free, confidential and open to the public.
Variety show
TURNER – The third annual Betty Libby Journalism Award Benefit Variety Show will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Leavitt Area High School auditorium. A $7 donation would be appreciated.

Apple Fest
MONMOUTH – The Monmouth Museum will hold its 15th annual Apple Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, on Main Street.
Apple Fest is a community event celebrating Monmouth’s agricultural past and the importance of the apple to it.
Visitors may tour the museum, buy apples and homemade apple pies and watch apple-related activities such as cider making and apple arts and crafts.
The museum will have two special exhibits: one of period clothing and another devoted to the 200th anniversary of the founding of Monmouth.
Trail opening
LITCHFIELD – The Litchfield Conservation Commission and the Stanton Bird Club will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 27, for the new Yellow Trail at the Woodbury Bird Sanctuary in Litchfield/Monmouth.
A welcome reception will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the ribbon-cutting by local dignitaries at 10. Afterward, all present are invited to walk the half-mile trail.

Distribution Day
AUBURN – Auburn AC Serve will hold Distribution Day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Auburn Advent Christian Church, Whitney Street entrance. Registration for October will also be taken. New participants are welcome. Those interested should call Janet at 784-2164.
Need donations
AUBURN – The Auburn Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association will hold a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28, and is seeking donations. The sale will be held at 33 Russell St. off Court Street.

Soup tasting
CASCO – The Casco Village Church will hold its seventh annual Soup Tasting Contest Supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Supper will be served until 6:30 p.m. or when all the soups are gone.
The cooks will vie for the “Winner’s Circle.” The public will vote after tasting the many samples, casting one vote nominating the favorite recipe in the categories. For more information on how to participate, call Pat Heintz at 627-4391 or the church office at 627-4282.
To go along with the samples, there will be homebaked bread, coffee and punch. To top off the contest will be the opportunity to build a sundae. The cost will be $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under; maximum of $15 a family.
Grants sought
LEWISTON – The Lewiston and Auburn Children’s Home is beginning its annual grant process. The home provides financial support to individuals and organizations working to benefit children in Lewiston and Auburn.
Requests for grants should be directed to: President, LA Children’s Home, 12 Benson St., Lewiston, ME 04240 The request must describe the project, the organization and the funds requested. One original and five copies of the request should be submitted by Oct. 10.
