LEWISTON – Representatives from “Rx Cares for Me” will be in Lewiston on Thursday to demonstrate how area residents may be able to receive free medicine or prescription discounts.

The demonstration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St., on the second floor study room.

Rx Cares for Me is a new prescription assistance service offered by drug makers. It was launched in July and endorsed by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, and U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

More than 325 assistance programs and more than 1,400 prescription medicines from drug makers may be accessed from one Web site, RxCaresForME.org. The toll-free number is 1-877-Rx-For-ME.

The free and confidential service provides a central point of access for Maine residents to find out if they qualify for prescription assistance. The service is for seniors and those without prescription insurance, but could also help anyone looking to save, said Jen Webber of the organization. In some programs qualifications are based on income and need.

The service is sponsored by several Maine organizations representing patients, physicians and hospitals, and by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the same group that has sued the state of Maine over its efforts to lower drug costs.
