BATCHELDERS GRANT – A 65-year-old Greenwood man died Wednesday from a heart problem while hiking on the Royce Trail in the White Mountain National Forest.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Capt. James P. Miclon said the man was about 1.5 miles off the south branch of Cold River, when he started having chest pains.

“He fell to the ground and died,” Miclon said.

Miclon said he was withholding the name until relatives could be notified.

He was hiking with his wife and two other people, according to Miclon.

His wife told Miclon the man did not have a history of heart problems and completed a 10-mile hike in that area just a week earlier.

Miclon said Chris Cloutier of the Maine Warden Service and OSO Cpl. Tim Ontengco went in with Fryeburg Rescue to bring the man out.

“It was a tough hike for them,” Miclon said. “They had to bring the man out on a stretcher.”

Deputy Chancey Libbey also assisted.
