DOVER-FOXCROFT – Hikers are being sought for the second annual Borestone Mountain Hikeathon on Saturday, Oct. 4, to help preserve a Piscataquis County landmark.

The event, held by Maine Audubon and the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft, seeks to raise funds to conserve the 1,639-acre Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is located 10 miles northeast of Monson in Elliotsville Township.

The round trip to Borestone’s summit is approximately five miles long over a well-maintained trail and can take up to four hours depending on hiking pace and time spent viewing fall foliage.

Hikers are asked to solicit pledges for the event, which has a rain date of Sunday, Oct. 5.

Any hiker turning in $25 in pledges will receive a Borestone Hikeathon T-shirt and those turning in $50 or more will get the T-shirt and a season’s pass to the sanctuary, said Tom Lizotte of the Kiwanis Club.

“We want to grow the hikeathon into an annual event that not only helps Maine Audubon, but also provides the community with a social time that promotes healthy physical activity,” Lizotte said. “We’ve picked this time of year because the view of autumn colors from Borestone’s peak should be spectacular.”

Bus transportation will be available for the event, with a bus leaving Mayo Regional Hospital’s rear parking lot on Dwelley Avenue in Dover-Foxcroft at 8 a.m., and from Guilford IGA at 8:30 a.m.

The hike starts at 9 a.m. from the Borestone main gate on Bodfish Road. Pledges can be turned in at the nearby sugar house. The usual gate fee will be waived for participants.

Apples and drinking water will be provided to all hikers at the nature center along the trail on Sunrise Pond.

For more information or pledge forms, phone Lizotte at 564-4342 or Lisa Kelly of Maine Audubon at 781-2332 ext. 234.
