DURHAM – Durham Fire Chief Bill St. Michel has received a colorful 9/11 commemorative photo collage made and presented on Sept. 9 by Lois Mitchell-Elfring of Freeport. It will be displayed at the fire station.

Mitchell-Elfring has decided to make and present commemorative collages to all surrounding fire departments in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001.

She said, “None of us will ever forget the events of 9/11, nor will we ever forget all the firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty on that fateful day. I believe it is importatnt to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives that day; however I feel it is more important to pay honor to our volunteer firefighters here on our home front.

“The volunteer firefighers unselfishly give of themselves and put themselves in harm’s way to serve and protect their communiites. No one knows the countless hours these men and women put in to train and respond to emergency calls, no matter the time of day or night, regardless of the weather. Whereas, most people spend 9/11 in remembrance, I would like to take this opportunity to thank and honor the volunteer firefighters of the Durham Fire Department.”
