It’s time to get rid of those materials that most people don’t know what to do with.

Saturday, Sept. 27, is the ninth annual Hazardous Waste Day sponsored by the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. Wastes include paints and related products, pesticides, hazardous cleaning products, leftover pool supplies, gasoline and solvents.

Eight towns in Oxford County will have sites for bringing material that should not be left at transfer stations throughout the year.

“It’s beneficial to our residents,” said Greenwood Town Manager Carol Whitman. “We have a pretty good turnout. They take advantage of it and we’re happy about it.”

Taking advantage of hazardous waste day means that substances won’t be dropped off inconspicuously at the transfer station.

Sue Martin, AVCOG administrative secretary for planning division, said more than 40 towns in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties participate.

She said towns will collect waste from residents and ship them to Auburn Public Works.

The waste will be shipped from there.

The places and times include:

• Bethel transfer station, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Buckfield municipal parking lot, 9 a.m. to noon

• Greenwood fire station, 9 a.m. to noon

• Norway/Paris transfer station, Norway, 8 a.m. to noon

• Otisfield transfer station, 9 a.m. to noon

• Oxford transfer station, 8 a.m. to noon

• West Paris transfer station, 9 a.m. to noon

• Otisfield will also have hazardous waste disposal Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Hebron residents may bring wastes to the Auburn Public Works garage at 296 Gracelawn Road from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. However, they must register beforehand by calling AVCOG by 2 p.m. Friday at 783-9186 and ask for Susan or Carol; registrations are also being accepted by e-mailing Carol at cfuller@avcog.org
