As a Christian, just as I do not support the Maine State Lottery and off-track betting, I will not support the proposed casino question because to gamble with what God has given me is tantamount to telling him that it is not enough.

Let’s be honest, the whole idea of gambling is to increase one’s winnings, pure and simple. The very nature of gambling is more than entertainment. It is getting more for less.

Granted, the thrill of the risk is part of the game, but the goal is to come away with more than with which one came. For me, to do that is to tell God that he knows nothing of my needs when the Bible tells me just the opposite. So, the question becomes, whom I am I going to trust? God or chance?

Second, the Bible tells me that I am not to play with things that could ruin me and destroy all that God has given me. With the potential of becoming addicted to gambling, I am told to forsake such folly lest I become a slave to it.

And, when we consider just how stacked the odds are against the player, what a folly it is.

Third, the Bible tells me that I am to care as much about my neighbor as I care about myself. If I could become addicted to gambling, why would I support the very thing that could also ruin my neighbor?
