NEW YORK (AP) – Mark Messier scored and Jussi Markkanen stopped 25 shots Sunday, leading the New York Rangers to a 4-1 exhibition win over the Boston Bruins.

Boston’s Martin Samuelsson spoiled Markkanen’s shutout bid at 19:09 of the third period with his second goal of the preseason. On a five-on-three power play in the second period, Messier accepted a pass from Martin Rucinsky in the high slot and put a slap shot between goalie Andrew Raycroft’s legs at 4:17.

Fedor Tjutin made it 2-0 at 14:21 when he came out from behind the Bruins’ goal and stuffed his own rebound past Raycroft. Richard Scott scored 48 seconds into the third on a slap shot from the left circle and Matthew Barnaby made it 4-0 at 15:06.

Markkanen was acquired by the Rangers in the offseason from the Edmonton Oilers.
