1916 – 2003

LEWISTON – L. Avis Smyc, 87, a resident of 1048 Sabattus St., formerly of Otisfield and Auburn, died early Sunday morning, Sept. 28, at the Marshwood Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation after a long illness.

Born in Lewiston, July 16, 1916, the daughter of Francis and Lura Morrell Greenleaf, she attended Lewiston schools and was a 1934 graduate of Lewiston High School.

She was an Army veteran of World War II, having served as a military court stenographer. Following the war, she was the office manager for the former H.P. Hood and Son plant in Auburn.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for Women, Unit 112 in Oxford. She was a member and participant in the Otisfield annual Professor Joel Holden Annual Picnic and Strawberry Ice Cream Festival, as well as a member of the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Francis Greenleaf of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one sister, Esther Robbins of California; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, a former Auburn Chief of Police, Stephen Smyc, who died Feb. 15, 1998; and two sisters, Glenice Radomski and Rowena Peabody.
