MINOT – Students at the Minot Consolidated School this fall are celebrating the 50th year that the school has been serving youngsters from all parts of town.

In his monthly report, Principal Don Bilodeau told the School Committee of efforts to acquaint today’s students with their school’s 50-year history.

Acknowledging one of the changes in school custom, Bilodeau pointed out that while today’s students began the school year in late August, it was on Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day, that cake and ice cream were served in celebration of the first day of school.

On display was a collection of photographs featuring faces from bygone days and documentation of the building’s several growth phases that began in 1953 with the closing of scattered one-room schools and the opening of the “consolidated” school.

Students were encouraged to come to school in 1950s dress in order to more appropriately enjoy a ’50s sock hop that will be held toward the end of the school day.

Bilodeau also publicly thanked Karen Nichols and MaryBeth Koletsky for their efforts leading a successful team-building day held Sept. 12 at the Hebron Pines Campground. The single day replaced overnight ventures at Bog Brook that has proven successful in promoting spirit of cooperation for the students and faculty in the grades six to eight wing.

Next week, the Middle School teachers will be receiving training on the use of laptop computers.

The School Committee authorized Assistant Superintendent Bill Doughty to sign the payroll warrant if the superintendent is unavailable.

The committee also formally accepted the resignation of Julia McQuarrie from her position as special education teacher, and Superintendent Nina Schlikin announced the hiring Carol Testagrose as secretary for special education.
