ELLSWORTH – The Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship Fund, established by the trustees of the Gannett Foundation through the Maine Community Foundation in 2000, has awarded scholarships to 22 students, all graduates of Maine high schools.
They will receive financial support for studies at schools across the country, including St. Joseph’s College, University of Maine, Northwestern University and Temple University. The awards this year total $62,800.
The new area Gannett Scholars are Robert Guerette, Auburn, and Ryan Hughes, Gray. Other area students had their Gannett scholarships renewed: Kathryn Brown, Fryeburg; Samantha DePoy, Farmington; Katie Fuller, Dixfield; Abigail Wheeler, Farmington.
All have been pursuing journalism projects and careers in Maine and elsewhere, reporting for newspapers, radio and TV stations. Example: While taking courses at the University of Maine at Farmington, Samantha DePoy is a full-time staff writer for the Lewiston Sun Journal.
A statewide organization with offices in Portland and Ellsworth, the Maine Community Foundation makes grants and provides leadership to strengthen Maine communities. This year the foundation is celebrating 20 years of providing philanthropic services to the state of Maine.
