JAY – Two North Jay teenagers were injured Wednesday when the car they were riding in collided with a tractor-trailer at White Avenue and Route 4.

Erika Welch, 16, and her brother, Kevin Welch, 16, were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington where they were treated and released, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

Erika Welch was operating a 1993 Ford car as she exited White Avenue onto Route 4 and traveled into the path of a tractor-trailer headed north, White said.

The 2000 Volvo truck was operated by Gordon Chase, 57, of Milo. He was not injured, White said.

The Welches’ car was struck on the driver’s side in the rear. When the car was struck, White said, the vehicle spun around 180 degrees and came to a stop facing west.

Community Emergency Services responded with an ambulance to the crash reported at 7:15 a.m., he said.

Firefighters directed traffic around the scene while White and officer Steve Smith handled the incident.

The tractor-trailer received about $4,000 damage to its front left bumper, fender and grill, White said.

Chase had pulled the rig to the side of the road ahead of the accident until the investigation was completed.

The car was totaled, the chief said.

White said the Welches “were both very lucky.”
