1917-2003

CASCO – Phyllis L. “Nana” Verrill of Casco, formerly of White Rock in Gorham, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 5, 2003, at Country Village Assisted Living in Casco. Born in Portland, March 15, 1917, she was the only child of Ernest B. and Stella I. Dietert Sherman.

She attended the schools of Portland and Gorham. She was employed at the former GTE Sylvania in Standish and retired from there in 1980.

She was a former member of the White Rock Grange, the White Rock Ladies Auxiliary and the Windham/Gorham Extension Group and was also a former Gorham Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed playing the piano, playing bingo and card games.

She and her husband, Everett, helped establish the hot lunch program at the White Rock School and helped with the White Rock Grange suppers and helped to raise money for Boy Scout Troop 85 by putting on whist card parties. She and her husband wintered in Mims, Fla. They enjoyed summers at Riverbend Campground in Leeds and Honey Run Campground in Peru. They also enjoyed spending time at Baxter State Park.

Survivors include a daughter, Stella I. Pierce and her husband Arthur L. Clarke of New Gloucester; two sons, William D. Verrill and his wife Shirley of Palm Beach, Fla., and Merton B. Verrill Sr. and his wife Elizabeth of Gorham; a former son-in-law, Louis Doucette of Titusville, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Arlene Verrill of Gorham; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Everett M. Verrill, on Jan. 5, 2000; and a son-in-law, William S. Pierce on Oct. 22, 1977.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff and friends at Country Village Assisted Living for the loving care and friendship given to Phyllis during her time spent there.

VERRILL – Phyllis L. of Casco. A graveside service will be held on Monday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at Sapling Hill Cemetery, Route 237, Gorham. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160-B, Portland, ME 04101-2406. Arrangements are by Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham.
