A Wilton man was arrested Tuesday after moving to town in August.

WILTON – A Franklin County Sheriff’s detective arrested a Wilton man Tuesday morning on a charge of failing to register as a sexual predator.

Dennis Ayala, 40, pleaded guilty in the early 1990s to giving a girl under the age of 16 drugs and then raping her at his Chesterville home, Detective David St. Laurent said.

Ayala served four and half years in the state prison and after that lived in Connecticut and then in Canaan in Somerset County.

In addition to jail and probation time, Ayala is required to register as a sexually violent predator with the state every 90 days and within 10 days of moving to a new town.

In August, he moved to Wilton, but failed to register with local police, the detective said.

St. Laurent learned about Ayala living in Wilton on Sept. 15 from a member of the community. St. Laurent gave the complaint to Wilton Police Chief James Parker, who issued Ayala a warning on Sept. 22.

On Tuesday, Ayala still hadn’t registered, and St. Laurent, along with Parker and Maine State Police Trooper Matt Cassavant, arrested him.

Later in the afternoon, Ayala posted $200 cash bail, registered as a sexually violent predator and was released. He will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 6 in District Court on the Class D charge of failing to register, which could result in up to 364 days in jail.
