Dear Sun Spots: We are hoping Sun Spots readers will take part in the fourth annual Carve a Pumpkin.

Interested participants can show off their carving talents and display their work in the Parade of Jack-O’-Lanterns Oct. 24, 25 and 26 on Gracelawn Road in Auburn (just past the new St. Dom’s High School, between the Auburn Public Works facility and the K&K excavation line).

Please drop off your creations between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 on Gracelawn Road. Then, bring your family and friends to view the lit Jack-O’-Lanterns from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, 25 and 26. Voluntary donations will be taken at the entrance to the parade for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Anyone interested in participating or volunteering can contact Mrs. O at (207) 783-3701 between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. for more information. Also, look for the Jack-O’-Lanterns on Channel 11. – Mrs. O., Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: A strange phenomena happened in our yard. Almost overnight a circle of around 40 lichens formed, with about six lichens on bare ground at the rim and grass in the center of the circle. Then a ring of mushrooms sprung up where the grass had disappeared at the rim. We were curious to know if anyone would know what caused this? – No Name, Sabattus.

Dear Sun Spots: To those people who like to scrapbook: The Turner Fire Department Auxiliary will host a Scrapping for Firefighters Day at Leavitt Area High School, Lower Street in Turner on Oct 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a cost of $25. I would appreciate it very much if you could please locate any reputable buyers. I can also be contacted by phone at (207) 364-2733. – V.J., Rumford.

Answer:
Perhaps other collectors out there may be able to assist you. Sun Spots has not had a luck in tracking this down.

Dear Sun Spots: Do you know where I can find super single-sized waterbed sheets? I have not been able to find a place to purchase them since Ames closed. Thanks for any help you may be. – Marjorie Merrill, Jay.

Answer:
Contact J.C. Penney at the Auburn Mall, (207) 786-2936 or the South Portland store at (207) 775-3911. As per the Sun Spots column of November 15, 2002 and May 15, 2003, these sheets can also be ordered through the JCPenney catalog. You can reach the catalog department through each of the numbers provided above.

Dear Sun Spots: Our service people are enduring terrible hardships overseas. This made me wonder if there is anything we can do to help alleviate their hardships and/or boost their morale. Is there something that can be done besides sending e-mails that would let them know they have not been forgotten? – J.P., Lewiston.

Answer:
Sun Spots is not aware of anything other than e-mails. Perhaps there are some spouses of those serving who may be able to share some information with you.
